You may not have realised it but Psychology and Security are closely interlinked with each other. (As is Clear View Fencing). As early as in 1943 the physiologist Abraham Maslow came up with the theory that personal security is one of the five hierarchy of needs that man needs in order to ensure his survival at the lowest level and the achievement of the complete human experience at the highest level.

Maslow lived in another time and in another place.  The question is thus:  what is currently meant by the word ‘Security’ in terms of the personal aspect thereof?

The concept of physical  security can be categorised as ‘the vessel or the means by which a person buys time in order to prepare for, deal with or prevent a specific threat’, This is a universal and timeless truth – since time immemorial man (and beast for that matter ) has put measures in place to protect that which he has invested time and effort in, be it family, food, or home. They made sure, whatever type of security was in place, that they’d have time to react.  The better the security the longer the time it offered the endangered person to prepare to protect that which needs protecting.

Over time both threat and the protection have magnified, changed shape and escalated in various degrees – eons ago Homu Erectus has rolled a huge boulder in front of his cave’s entrance and thát was thát, job done!

Time is something money can’t buy.

Nowadays crime has morphed into a Mafia-type entity with a myriad tentacles in countless types of criminal activity. In order to keep up with the sheer intensity and density of crime, man has evolved numerous countermeasures – but the core idea has always stayed the same, the better the anti-crime measures the more time it buys the protected person or place.

It is therefore easy to come to the conclusion that the better informed would have the better security. The Darwinian concept of evolution and the survival of the best comes to mind here. This does not mean that the security measures need to be highly developed.  It is often just the opposite that holds true.  It may be that a low technology solution exists for an advanced or complicated threat.

By way of explanation, we can take the “expropriation without compensation” concept as an example. Notwithstanding the best intentions, there will be those that will see it as a borderline threat and others that will see it as an advanced threat.  A Hidden threat.  If there was ever a time to take stock of your security, that time is surely now!!!
